Hybrid Car Acronyms and Definitions:
  • Hybrid Vehicle - uses multiple propulsion systems to provide motive power. This most commonly refers to gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, which use gasoline (petrol) and electric batteries for the energy used to power internal-combustion engines (ICEs) and electric motors.
  • Fossil Fuels - the nationís principal source of electricity. The popularity of these fuels is largely due to their low costs. Fossil fuels come in three major forms-coal, oil, and natural gas. Because fossil fuels are a finite resource and cannot be replenished once they are extracted and burned, they are not considered renewable.
  • ZEV - Acronym which means Zero Emission Vehicles - ZEVs have zero tailpipe emissions are 98% cleaner than the average 2003 model year vehicle. These include battery electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
  • Grid energy storage - the use of various energy storage techniques to complement electric power generation plants on the transmission grid.
  • SULEV - Acronym which means Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicles, which are 90% cleaner than the average new 2003 model year car.
